Come celebrate with us! Remember those we have loved and lost through art and music!

A Message From La Catrina

Welcome to Día de los Muertos 2020!

Senior Danae Carrillo-Herrejon

The Dia de los Muertos is one of (if not the most) attended and widest-participated festival at Mira Loma! The tradition of celebrating this cultural-experience festival began in 2002 as a classroom festival. Within two years, other Spanish Classes wanted to participate and so the festival expanded to the library where the larger space meant several classes could share an experience at the same time. Around 2010 it was moved to the Cafeteria and a touchpoint was created inside the International Studies Program’s Senior English and I.S. Art classes.

Through the following years, additional Spanish Languages Classes, Art Classes and English Classes have created lessons and units that teach students new ways to express thoughts, emotions and mark important life events. Through altars, poetry, sculptures, dancings, music, piñatas, and various productions of art the students of Mira Loma contribute to the largest festival at Mira Loma.

Ofrendas

Día de los Muertos is an important day in commemorating those we have lost. One of these ways to remember include the creation of ofrendas (altars). Ofrendas vary in color to reflect the favorite colors of their subject. The collections of paper flowers, personal items and decorative art create places that celebrate loved ones.

Recordando en poesía

There are many ways to remember those who have left us. One of those ways is through written word. Sophomore English students write poems inspired by family, friends and people they admire each year as a way of honoring those people who have made an impact in their lives.

Música y baile

Dia de los Muertos is all about the community and nothing brings people together more than music and dancing. The type of dancing and music changes year to year, but the expressions of joy through memory and happiness

There are so many ways to celebrate!

Recetas Familiares

Many cultural traditions are passed down through celebrations and gatherings where good food is involved. In sharing family recipes, students share the food that brings them and their loved-ones together.
